My most recent paintings incorporate contemporary symbolism and images in a themed approach which reflect the spiritual way I view life. As I begin to work at scraping and layering using a variety of mediums, with layers of vibrant, colorful paints, some abstractions develop. I add in intermingling areas of realism and graphic images that create a push-pull effect on the viewer. I have always been intrigued by color and light, and their influence on a subject, as well as our physiology. The effect an image has on us at both a physical and a soul level - the wonder and awe felt in a certain place we visited in life, the image burned into our memory, is what I am after. I don't try to make an exact replication of a scene. Most of my work is done in the studio after copious notes, studies and just sitting and viewing an image or area that intrigues me. Drawing on that fascination and wonder I experience in the field, I return to the studio and try to create a painting that will express these feelings for others to experience.
The "themed" painting series are the more symbolic, and dynamic, surreal paintings. They are not necessarily any place anyone has ever been - but a kind of dreamscape that still creates that wonder and awe of an ethereal journey that I am after.
"As I work, the images find their way into my thoughts, and through the Grace of Spirit, what seemed to be a group of unrelated elements become a unified whole, which has taken me on a journey through a previously unrecognized part of my being."
